Showing visitors the magic of the Pacific Coast north of San Francisco is a wonderful way to spend a weekend. A few weeks ago while rambling up Highway 1 we stopped in the town of Point Reyes Station and found Gallery Route One, “GRO”. As luck would have it they were opening their annual Box Show. Wow!

Gallery Route One Box Show 2011

The Box Show is a fundraiser that GRO holds every year. 150 artists are chosen from a list of entrants and each artists is give a box. The rules are simple: use the box in an artwork, and finish the work in time for the show. The boxes are auctioned off to raise money to support GRO and its community activities.

The gallery is large and well-lit, with multiple rooms full of all kinds of box art. There are boxes framing paintings, boxes taken apart, diorama boxes… who knew there are so many ways to construct and deconstruct a box? The feelings range from comic to tragic, from political to personal.

I have an interest in technology and perception so I particularly enjoyed the iPhone-enhanced “Talk Box” by Gabriel McCulloch and the 3D “Julie’s Dream” by Robert Bloomberg.

I like so many that it’s hard to pick a favorite, though on a foggy day back at home I respond to the the quiet minimalism and the nod to Jackson Pollock of “Untitled” by Michele Gardner.

The show is running now until Sept. 18, so visit the gallery and make a bid, there’s a box for every taste and style. If you can’t make it to Marin County, you can view all the boxes and make a phone bid!
